日本国民は、

We, the Japanese people,

恒久の平和を念願し、

desire peace for all time

［人間相互の関係を支配する崇高な理想]を深く自覚す るのであつて、

and are deeply conscious of [the high ideals controlling human relationship],

〈平和を愛する諸国民の公正と信義に信頼して〉、

われらの安全と生存を保持 しようと決意した。

and we have determined

to preserve our security and existence,

〈trusting in the justice and faith of the peace­loving peoples of the world〉.

※最後は信頼した、と決意した、が逆転してますね。

われらは、

[平和を維持]し、

［専制と隷従、圧迫と偏狭を<地上から永遠に>除去]しようと

努めてゐる国際社会において、

名誉ある地位を占めたいと思ふ。

We desire to occupy an honored place

in an international society

striving for

[the preservation of peace],

and

[the banishment of tyranny and slavery, oppression and intolerance

<for all time from the earth>].

われらは、

[全世界の国民]が、

ひとしく恐怖と欠乏から免かれ、

平和のうちに生存する権利を有すること

を確認する。

We recognize that [all peoples of the world ]

have the right to live in peace, free from fear and want.
